Had a great day on Sunday at Bergoo. The weather was perfect - it had rained that morning so zero dust, and the rain held off until a little after 4 during the day. We followed BobT's map and rode just under 70 miles. Good trails, varying terrain, gorgeous views and fun creek crossings. There are trails all over the place down there. Would enjoy getting together with a group and let Hump be our guide.
Some of the pics are video extracts from the GoPro, which I had mounted to the dash. Pretty shaky - thinking I need to mount it to the rollcage from here on for a more solid foundation. Some of the other pics were taken with my phone.

Hump and I rode Monday. Was a wet start but ended up very nice. Did you ride by yourself? If so, you're a brave man hitting those trails alone. It's a LONG way out in some places. Did you start at the Elk Springs Resort end? That is a real good loop. I got some more tracks on Monday that I am going to try to get to BobT to add to his map the next time he does an update. Hump is an awesome guide. He shows me something different every time I ride with him. If you stay on the well beaten trails, you really can't get lost. It's pretty intimidating at first, but you should come out on one of the mapped trails eventually. Thanks for the pics. Looks familiar!

It's a great place to ride. Everyone we met was extremely friendly and nice too. Felt like a Bergoo family down there. I rode with a Sportsman utility ATV... definitely not that brave! Most of the trails were cleared and beaten back from the poker run I guess. We started at Leatherwood, pretty much right where Parking is noted on Bob's map and did the Leatherwood Creek loop first. Really wanted to see those waterfalls. Then went south around the Barton Mill Run loop, then went north east toward Elk Springs on Red Oak and some other trails that way. Tons of offshoots everywhere that looked like even more great riding. From the Elk Springs side we came back down the "main road".
We drove in from the Valley Head / Route 219 side... next time I won't trailer in all the way to Leatherwood.

Good deal! It was pretty empty on Monday. I ride over from my house in Selbyville in WV Upshur Co. Takes me an hour on the dot to get to the Bergoo Store. Dirt and some blacktop. If we do any rides this fall, I will let you know. You can park at the house and ride from there if it would be easier for you.

I'd be up for that some time! A lady I work with is from Selbyville too, so I've heard a lot about the area, seen lots of photos, etc, without ever being there. I've been down 20 to Hacker Valley / Holly River but never east to Selbyville or Pickens.

Nice pics and videos. How did you know what mudholes to stay out of? I would like to know how many miles I've put in over there total. I really like riding over there, even though I'm just a little bored with the place after all these years. The only thing that ain't great is the fact that you have to ride some of the same stuff more than once, even on the same day, because of all the short trails and intersections. Not a huge area, but it does have a few nice trails and some great scenery. Fall/winter is the best as long as there is not a ton of snow.
One thing I need to add.....DO NOT CLIMB THAT POWERLINE WHERE YOU PARKED!!! There is a turn not far from the bottom, and once you go around it you are committed. I did it one time in the rzr s I had, and I will never do it again.

Pretty sure I got lucky on the mudholes. I try to go around the worst of mud holes & go slow through ones I'm not familiar with. The ATV I was with got stuck on that bad section on the back side of the Barton Mill Loop and had to winch out. Some of those holes are deep!
While we were loading we watched a couple different groups go up that hill with the powerlines at the top. We didn't venture that way & it sounds like that's a good thing. The only trouble we got into all day was toward the end of the northern trail on BobT's map that's labeled Elk Springs-Bergoo. The Bergoo Creek offshoot heading west had a gate at the end near the store by the narrow bridge on Bergoo Road. Not the Bergoo Store but the other one... starts with a C but don't remember. That gate was shut so we had to turn back.
From there we headed north toward Elk Springs... wanted to connect with Bergoo Road and finish our day. Toward the end of that at the top of "Mill Road" that's labeled on Google maps, there was a really steep section with a turn in the middle and rock outcroppings that made it even steeper. Scary... but didn't want to turn back. Now that that's done, I'll never go that way again either haha.

That is a nasty hill! I hit it last month in the POURING down rain. My mother in law was following my with my little girl in her rzr and she didn't hit it hard enough. She had to back off and started sliding. When she got stopped, her back right tire was over the hill. If it weren't for where you could end up, that place wouldnt be that bad. We hit it Monday but the sun had dried it off a little bit. It is pretty spooky even when it's bone dry.

Yup I hear ya, we were on it just after a heavy downpour. Trail was slick, tires at least somewhat filled with mud... wet rock, muddy tires = intimidation. All that mixed with the perception of a bottomless pit / canyon behind you. I got my adventurous itch filled with that haha.

I was all over that hill from side to side with the front diff locked and the hammer down. It was slick. I always climb the right side, and come down the other one. I bet there is a trail to bypass that.

Sketchy for sure. We originally missed the turn off to head that way off of the main trail on the mountain... it was pouring at that time and we just passed it. Didn't realize it until we were clearly way off the map on the GPS. Studying the track overlaid on Google Maps it looks like that would've taken us further out Red Oak and then back to Leatherwood or over toward Elk Road. Obviously not certain, it just felt like a better beaten path.

You are correct. It would have brought you back closer to where you parked. It is a much more traveled road. The next time I am there, I am going to try to find a trail around that nasty hill. Down in the bottom in the real tight trails, there is a trail that cuts up the hill to the right. I will try it and see if it will bypass the bad stuff. It isn't very well traveled though, so I am assuming it probably won't. I am going to get the GPS tracks that I made following Hump on Monday to BobT so he can add them to his map. There are some other main trails that I haven't tracked and got to Bob yet also, so I will get them to him soon also.

Sounds great, the more tracks that can be added the better. On my GPS I put waypoints at the waterfall locations that I thought to send to him in case he wanted to add those. Once we made it up over the bad hill, the trail seemed better traveled as well once we got up on the flat. We went to the left, but I did wonder where the trail to the right went. I thought maybe it took another way down to the bottom or somehow connected back with something better traveled to make the loop. You always wonder those things though when you're out riding haha.

You have to watch where you go because you can end up on nat'l forest service roads and get in trouble. Expensive trouble.

I need to hit the trails on the other side of the river again and do some exploring. They were logging in pretty heavy for a couple yrs so I stayed away. I know of a few trails that make good loops to the top of Point Mt and back down to Bergoo road. I don't like doing that stuff alone though. Call me crazy, but it scares me a little to go into the unknown all alone with one vehicle when it starts getting a little rough.

Only makes sense to me! I only ride alone if I'm familiar with the area, have cell phone service & a contact close by to help if need be. There are just too many things that can go wrong.

South East of Flatwoods by about 45 miles. 45 miles doesn't sound like much but that's a windy, curvy 45 miles.

Do you come through that way mccauley? I wonder if it would be an easier drive for you to come through Elkins and Valley Head? I think the resort is about an hour from Elkins and downtown Bergoo is about 30 more minutes.

Yeah the Elkins way is the way I came sportsman. From where I'm at near Philippi it's a much easier drive that way and a little bit shorter. I just looked where jmath was coming from and saw it was on the I77 side of things.

It's about 10 min from Webster Springs, about 1 1/2 hrs from Charleston. Once on Bergoo Rd, go until you see a gas station on the right. Park there and hit leatherwood rd that goes in behind the store and start hitting it.

I've been working on uploading more videos from our rides in the last couple weeks and got all the ones from the 8/31/14 Bergoo Ride uploaded. I made a playlist on the channel, which is embedded below. If you click on the "PLAYLIST" tab on the top left, it will let you scroll through all of the videos from the day. Nothing too exciting, just some easy going footage from a great place to ride.
