| While it has taken much longer than we would have preferred, construction is expected to finally begin this March on the official visitors center facility for the Hatfield-McCoy Trail system in Mercer County. After spending several months mulling over a number of different locations, a local selection committee appointed by the Mercer County Commission has finally settled on a trailhead site off of U.S. Route 52 on Coaldale Mountain. The location, which is also known as the former Blizzard Mountain property, is located near the border of Mercer and McDowell counties. An environmental study and appraisal of the property must still be completed before work can begin on the new trailhead facility, according to County Commissioner Gene Buckner, also a member of the site selection committee. “And after all the preliminaries are done, we’re going to proceed with purchasing the property,” he said. “The landowner has given us a price and we’ve got to take that back to the grant awarder, which is the federal government.” The trailhead, also known as a visitors center, will be funded through a $500,000 West Virginia Recreational Trails Program grant awarded in 2015 to the Hatfield-McCoy Trail Authority. Depending upon the weather, Buckner says officials are hoping to break ground on the project in March. Once completed, the official Hatfield-McCoy trailhead will offer facilities for ATV tourists and other visitors. “There’s going to be ample parking for ATVs and visitors,” Buckner told the Daily Telegraph last week. “They’ll be selling amenities for the Hatfield-McCoy Trail, have bathroom facilities, and other things like that. Hopefully we’ll find someone who is willing to look at the other (adjoining) parcel of property and look at putting lodging there.” The official trailhead site of the Hatfield-McCoy system isn’t to be confused with a private welcome center that was opened last year at the intersection of Route 52 and Lorton Lick Road in Bluewell. The existing Buffalo Trail Visitors Center, which is easily recognizable by its big and distinctive inflatable buffalo, is a project of local entrepreneur Seth Peters, owner of the nearby Buffalo Trail ATV Resort on Lorton Lick Road near Bluewell. The existing visitors center in Bluewell has been a big help, and having the official Hatfield-McCoy trailhead opening later this spring will only further enhance the experience for our out-of-town visitors. In fact, the more accommodations that are developed for the ATV riders, the better. Tourism is now critical to the future of our region, and ATV tourism is a vital part of our local economy. It is imperative that we continue to support and grow this new tourism engine. Just how important is the out-of-town traffic to our region? Just ask Bramwell Mayor Louise Stoker. She says ATV riders from every state in the nation — with the exception of Hawaii — have now been to Bramwell to ride the Hatfield-McCoy Trail. And there are visitors who come from Alaska at least once a year to ride the trails. These visitors are spending their money right here in Mercer County at local restaurants, convenience stores, ATV shops, campgrounds, hotels and motels and bed and breakfast facilities. But additional accommodations are still needed to meet their needs. That’s why the sooner the official trailhead can be opened, the better. | |

| It's at the intersection of US-52 and Windmill Gap Rd. What a waste of $500,000. With labor, insurance, utilities, etc it won't even break even. Are they encouraging people to ride US-52 3 miles to get to Bramwell? Anybody seen the similar Visitors Center at Little Coal River (which is now shut down). They sell the same stuff and passes that Ashland and other vendors sell. It was a federal grant so in other words free taxpayer money. It will only be used by day trippers and people who have to trailer from their lodging.
Money would be much better spent on the Warrior Trail or East Lynn Trail system they have said they are going to build. | |

| Good article. It is very informative. I have heard the area there along US 52 just above Windmill Gap Road being referred to as the Coaldale Mountain area. Riding west away from 52 on that road just above Windmill Gap Road and up that road a mile or more, there is another gravel or surface road that has the sign Coaldale Mountain Road. Bob is more than likely correct in his post. BUT, any kind of activity that will support the ATV Industry should be a help in lifting it up in the communities for more interest and will surely support Bramwell even more then. The access to the H/M Trails will more than likely be Windmill Gap Road to the Pocahontas IR Connector...MD | |

| I'm with Bob on this one, the H/M management is some of the worst I have seen for misguided money use. | |
