Ford is number one in Truck sales  --

Number 1 in diesel repair costs is also true.
Number 1 in poor mpg is also true (that V10 never missed a gas station).

With that said the 5.4L V8 is probably Ford's second most reliable engine after the 300 Straight 6.  There are lots of those around with 200k miles and minimal repairs.  The rest of the truck is a pit but the 5.4L's are holding up well in general.  The Eco-Boost has sold 1,000,000+ engines but I doubt many of them will see 200k miles without $2k in repairs.  They are great but not the hype that Ford advertises.  I've got several friends with Eco's and they just get so-so mpg -- no better than avg towing.

Dad has that v10 in his motor home, it gets about 12 mpg, not bad for a class c gasser. I drove the 5.4 and the 5.3 Chev but didn't like either one. The medium duty Fords use Cummins diesel and Allison trans.

12mpg motorhome with the V10 is exceptional.  Heck several friends of mine traveled from Winston Salem to Utah and only averaged around 8mpg towing a 18 ft enclosed trailer behind a F350 V10.

So Monday I was hauling firewood with my tow pig.....

Took it to the track Thursday and ran a 11.94 @112

Video

And trying to back up my 11.94 I ran a 12.02 @112, (Bonus, it was against a new 5.0 Mustang that I smoked!)

Nice truck.  My 5.0 still amazes me.  I put a level on it with 295/70 18s and I can still drag the hell out of my 14' extended height enclosed trailer.  It's crazy that an engine that small can do that.  And, the thought that the ecoboost is even better blows my mind.

You got a nice truck, Hump. I have 275/70-18's on my Tundra. They're heavy 10 ply but they ride good and they're quiet.
Tundra is supposedly coming with the V8 Cummins 5.0 next year.
Nissan uses the same engine, Dodge rejected it in favor of a smaller engine.
I doubt I would trade since mine is paid for but I want to drive one.

With the VW you don't need ramps to load, just drive up the back and off the front.

good one  The tow vehicle here is a very basic set-up.  2007 GMC Sierra 2500HD Classic.  It pulls great with the 6.0 Vortec.  It likes gasoline, but around 12 mpg is usually the average pulling the sxs...MD

Everyone needs to experience Ecoboost towing at some point.  That 3.5 Twin Turbo is incredible.  I've driven a friends up Fancy Gap several times towing 3 SxS and several ATV's and it will hold 70mph cruise control and not drop below 4th gear.  Heck it stays in 6th most of the time.  Best use of cruise control towing I've ever seen.  That motor just pulls.  Very similar to the Dodge 5.9 Cummins with auto except the Cummins drops gears more.

With that said the Eco normally averages under 9mpg with that load to Tn and back.  It takes power to tow with speed.

Only warning I have on EcoBoost is change the plugs at 60 k miles.  Ignore the 100k Ford Recommendation if doing any towing.  The heat kills the plugs and once they crack the coil packs will go.  Easy fix but you can't drive when the engine is missing.  It feels like a wrecking ball hitting the truck.
