| Locating and stalking is the most productive on our property. That means long shots. I have a 22-250 Tikka Varment but it really is a little too small a caliber(and too heavy) to stalk deer. Using a bipod mount experience says it's deadly at 300 + yd.s. I'm thinking about a Tikka T3 Lite, stainless, in 270 cal. on shooting sticks for stalking. Any opinions? Any sources? If I decide to buy, I'll have a really good custom for sale - 270 cal. Douglas barrel, Mouser action, Timney trigger, Bishop stock, Limbsaver recoil pad, with/or without Burris scope. A custom load recipe for 1-1/2" 3 shot pattern off the bipod @ 150 yd.s. | |

| nice set up. us ohio boys can only use shotgun ( i have an Ithaca Deerslayer) and muzzleloaders (TC Pro Hunter).
I have a Wicked Ridge Crossbow and really like hunting with it. Archery for deer starts last weekend in september and runs through early february.

| ya gotta try it sometime daryl. nothing like watching the sun come up from 16' above the ground in a ladder stand. light snow falling. cardinals and squirels bounding about. watching deer come into sight. the occasional coyote playing with a field mouse and never knowing you are there. and for me, no phone calls from work. damn, hopefully i'll be able to get out this weekend. | |

| If I had the choice between a coyote and a deer, I would take the coyote. They are much harder to get around here. My preference for a carry gun in the woods would be something with a short barrell, light weight and cheap, w/a low power scope and in 30 caliber. The 270 talks to loud for me. I would expect to be shooting a hundred yards or less. Maybe do a little trigger work, other than that, leave it be.. | |

| Without trying not to sound too technical; a rifle is like a tool. There are different tools for different jobs. But as you asked for a light weight, easy to shoot rifle I'd recommend something like a Savage w/synthetic stock in a .308 caliber. They're not too expensive and have very good barrels for the money. .308 is probably the all round caliber for the east coast.
I myself like Remington 700's and have them various cailbers. But they cost a little more overall.

I like my ruger 7mm mag stainless steel with a synethic stock. It is lite weight and easy to carry around and really packs a punch at far distance's.

| Finzup are you wanting Light weight gun that you can use for both deer and varmit? What price range are you looking for? I would recommend a 243. Just about a perfect middle caliber for those two. Or look at the new Thompson Dimension. Go to Thompson's website and check out all the different calibers you can interchange for the Dimension. It is also guaranteed MOA accurate!! Not the sexiest of rifles, but I like the flexibilty it gives. For instance if you want to shoot a 22-250, 243, 7MM-08, or a 308 all you need to do is buy a new barrel, since all those rounds are just a necked down 308 cartridge. However you can change to many different calibers if you also buy a new barrel+bolt. The dimension is a bolt action rifle, not a single shot. | |

I have a Tkka Varment in 22-250 that I really like for stationary, long range shooting. I'm not a deer stalking expert but hunting on a farm with mostly meadow and pasture I can see them on the next ridge or in the adjacent hollow and before I can find a rest, they're gone. So I'm thinking about a light weight ,medium caliber rifle to use with a shooting stick. This morning I looked at the Ruger, 'A' bolt and 'X' Bolt Brownings, Tikka T-3 Blue, SS and Fluted barrels. All very nice and relatively affordable. The 'X' Bolt and Tikka SS, Fluted were very impressive to hold, especiall the Tikka. I will check out the Dimension also. As far as caliber goes, I've been less than thrilled with my one-and-only .270 on longer shots. I've not made up my mind on another choice even though I've made up a good .270 hand load. Thanks, everyone, for the input. Hope it keeps coming.

| It really depends on how much you are willing to spend. If you're looking for an all-round rifle check out the various companies "Scout" rifle. It might be what you're looking for. A rifle designed to be decent at various tasks.
Also; If you're not used to shooting, a bigger caliber might cause some problems for you later on. Like flinching or jerking the trigger in anticipation of the recoil. Which can be signifigant with a lightweight heavy caliber/magnum rifle.
Shot placement is more important than just hitting the target with big bullet.

| Well then, I have been having good results with my trusty 6br for several years now if you are talking caliber. You are in the same situation I'm in. Open fields, long range. But I find a high spot and shoot prone. Can't shoot to well off sticks. Three hundred yard shots are easy enough. I got one at a lasered 520 yards but that's stretching it. So for less recoil, cheaper reloading, you might look into a 24 caliber. Got 26 this summer, all one shot. A surprisingly effective caliber for longer ranges. | |

| I agree with all the info so far and have had most all of the calibers mentioned, from 243, 308, 7-08,270, 264 300 Win mag,7 wmag and stw. Lately tho I have hunted with the Browning Abolt Varmiter in the 25 WSSM and luv it for a carry and stand gun. It also work well on the parie puppies, ground hogs and yotes! Just lots of fun to reload and play with plinking too. | |

Saw lots of good reviews on Tikka .243.

| FINZUP it's one of those little short stubby cases necked down to a 25 cal bullet. it ballistic wise is not any faster than the 25=06 but with less powder. Now the 270 WSM performs better than the 270 Weatherby while the rest of the WSM's are at or below the ballistics of the Weatherby mags. | |

| Finz I have a 270 weatherby mag in a Mark V. It is a great caliber for what you are looking for, only problem is the recoil, every time I shoot it I have to put my socks back on. I bought it for a Big Horn, Mnt goat rifle out west, 600 yrd are no problem. | |

Hey Rick. Was hoping you'd chime in. My old custom is a .270 that's pretty good at 150 yds. You, and others, schooled me on making a good reload. Anything beyond that range it's rare to get a second shot being off target from the recoil. Plus, it's a nine pound gun and I'm not very good at off-hand shooting. I've researched the recommendations everyone has made and went to Cabela's/Gander Mountain to see how they feel(all but the Dimension). My favorite is the Tikka T3 Lite s/s w/ a fluted barrel probably in a 7mm-08. Sub 6 lbs with their famously wonderful action. That being said, during my research I found out that my custom turns out to be very desireable as a Sporter with it's G33/40 action. I'm not going to mess it up but I'll see what I can do to make it lighter before I jump on the $900 Tikka. Thanks everyone.
