| After much procrastination, I finally got around to changing my front and rear differential fluids. I found the front differential drain bolt only on finger tight! When the oil started to drain it was milky! Going to let it drain good overnight, refill and drain again and then fill it up and close it up. The rear was fine, bolts were tight and oil looked pretty good! That drain bolt in the front differential....what butt head decided that was a good place for a bolt you need to remove for maintenance! |

| Yes, that is very true. I really should have looked at the differential fluids sooner than I did. The owners manual is a little sketchy about the differential fluids unlike the 200 mile change on the engine and every 1000 after that. I think I will just start changing out the differentials every 500 miles. |

| 500 miles is a good schedule. That front drain bolt is tough to get back in. I drilled a 1/2 inch hole in line with the bolt right were the skid plate curves back level. The 8mm socket will fit through there. It may make it easier for you. The pic is not very good but you get the idea. Use some wheel bearing grease to hold the bolt in the socket. | |

| I don't think the diff oil needs to be changed really often as long as no water gets in there. One thing is for sure, those steel drain plugs threading into aluminum are really easy to get to loose or to tight.
It's cheap to change it often as they don't hold much, and they are easy to drain too. The part of it that makes me neglect mine it getting that thick crap in there and knowing for sure it is full.

| Then only thing about that is that you have no idea that you have water in there until you change it. I am going to be picking up a piece of clear tubing to help filling the thing up. At least that way I can see the oil from the bottle to the fill hole. |

| Nice find Groundhog. I need one.
Yeah Ross, it's hard to tell what is going on inside the diff. Every few rides I take out the fill plug and stick my finger in it. If the oil looks grey I change it right then. I have went through the creeks at WW with new oil and came home with light grey oil. Haven't had that problem yet with my current ride, but all others I have. I do check my breather tubes often to make sure they are not cut, loose, or missing.
It is a real pain to refill. It makes me so paranoid when I change it because they don't hold hardly any oil anyway, so you want to make sure you got it right. That pump is nice. Gear oil moves so slow it aint funny.

| Hump, thanks for the "sticking your finger in the fill hole" to check color....that's an easy way to check the fluid for contamination. Not sure why I didn't think of that. The gear oil pump is fantastic! After I got that damn little screw back in (ended up drilling out the skid plate and having to cut a socket extension in half so it would clear the A-arm and give me a straight line to the hole) I used the pump to refill the oil! THE PUMP IS A MUST HAVE! Thanks again Groundhog! |
