- Thanks for the replies guys. So can I buy a gun without a permit from a gun store? Or do I need to get the permit and class first?
Tbone, don't concern yourself with a concealed carry permit, your not there yet. A purchase permit only cost $5. No biggy if you never use it and its good for 5 years. Then if you see one you like, you can buy it right then. But you do need to go shoot before you buy, if nothing more than to satisfy yourself that you really want one and to get over the fear. Still sounds like you have some uncertainty.

| I just noticed I didn't put the web site in on the earlier post http://www.usacarry.com/concealed_carry_permit_reciprocity_maps.html
You just pick the state your permit is in and it will show you the states you can carry in

- The reason you have to wait 5 days in NC is called a "cooling off" period. It's "supposed" to prevent someone from buying a handgun out of anger and shooting someone with it 10 minutes later. It all came to pass years ago when a man went and bought a gun to kill his wife while he was still steaming, and did just that. Also more thorough background checks. If you have ever been convicted of any kind of assault including Domestic violence in any state...no permit. It's a little annoying, but 5 days is not a big deal if it keeps someone from getting killed.
I have never heard of a COOLING OFF PERIOD!! I have purchased handguns in NC both ways....Purchase permit and Concealed Carry....Everytime I did I was in and out with no problem! Makes no sense...If you want to shoot someone you can purchase a $100.00 single barrell shootgun at Wal-Mart in 30min!!! Just purchased a Ruger 9mm at Christmas time. From the time I walked tru the door and back out was less then 45min!

- Yeah, here in wv, and in va, the dealer calls the batfe/fbi and they do a background check on you while they stay on the phone waiting for them to say yes or no. You must also do some paperwork to be sent in. I thought this was how it worked everywhere. Guess I was wrong.
Having to get a background check at the sherriffs office before hand, and wait on it to come back....Well..
Every time I go to Charleston, I always go in Gander Mt and look around. One day I noticed that their gun prices had dropped to a decent level. I started the paperwork on a handgun, and they guy said "Ok, you can pick it up in three days." He said it was a city law that you have to wait 3 days for them to check and see if you owe back child support. Having a concealed permit didn't change things either. I told him to let the city of Charleston know that they just hurt their economy durring tough times because of their laws. The guy said he understood that it wasn't worth the drive to come back later, and he didn't blame me. He laughed and said "hell, you are probably packing right now" I said Yes, and he laughed and shook his head. I high tailed it back to Jerry's sporting goods and purchased the same gun, and walked out of the store with it in minutes.
I can't believe the NRA isn't all over that NC policy. That is just a way to try to discurrage you from buying a gun. What a bunch of next time your in/near charleston, come on down the road to st. albans and give us a shot. st. albans gun and archery. we dont have any waiting periods, like the charleston city ordnaces and we have very competitive prices to anyone in wv. and the 4473 form you fill out doesnt get sent anywhere. we as well as all wv gun shops are required to keep them on file on location for 20 years.

The reason NC has a 5 day wait is b/c it adopted a ratified Brady bill in 1998 which required it and the NC supreme court referred to it as a "cooling down period" for someone wanting to commit violence. No, it doesn't stop someone from getting their hands on one. Just like most of the decisions from the supreme court, only effects law-abiding folks. Prior to that a background check could be done a matter of minutes and you could be on your way. And this doesn't apply to CCP and most Sheriff's won't make you wait if he knows you personally. But thats what i meant,

Might just be somebody just talking about something they know nothing about but still need to know from store like you mentioned!
