We stayed at Ashland resort #26, got in early afternoon 12-10. Temperature wasn't bad. We bopped around IR and below, off trail 80, cleared a bunch of fallen trees. Thursday night the bottom fell out. My brakes were frozen solid, luckily we brought a heat gun which was put to use by us and our neighbors.
Friday, once we could get our 4 wheelers moving, we headed over towards WW to see if anything was going on. Got there around 11:30, not open, several cars and a newer bus in the lot. It was downright brutal out, still in the low 20's. We headed back and ended up at Coal Creek Cafe for lunch. It was a balmy 58 inside. Lunch was good. We headed back to the cabin to collect our thoughts. By about 2 we decided to give it another shot, the sun was blazing and it was bearable. Rode some more of IR, cleared more trees. All of 28, part of 37 and 46 are no longer a trail, more like a highway now. New gas well going in I was told by the workers.
Saturday we defrosted our brakes again and ventured off to the Windmill Gap area with Bramwell being our destination. Some dead ends, some trail blazing, but we finally made it. Tons of logging going on over there. Don't these people know we are trying to ride? lol
Turned out to be a perfect day temperature wise. Found some great trails, tested the thickness of the ice over many mudholes hoping the guy behind you was the one to fall through. You could see the ice flex from the wave underneath, it was really neat to see.
The whole weekend turned out to be a lot dustier than I had planned. Freeze dried I guess.
Awoke to rain this morning as we headed home, found several spots of black ice in and around McComas, very scary!
Ashland Resort has some issues, the wireless was out and they didn't seem too concerned about it. We had to rob parts from the other gas grills to get ours to work, which eventually failed Saturday as we had planned steaks. Cooked them on the fire instead.
Didn't pass another rider all weekend.
All in all, still was a great trip.
Wish I had more but generally it was too cold to be digging out a camera.
