| I would say pay tax on your purchase in the state you live in, and keep reciepts for it. They pretty much make us "register" our atv/utv in wv so the lien holder has a title as proof of ownership until you have your loan payed in full. Just like a car. In other words, the banks here won't loan the money without a title when you put the unit up for colateral.
But all of that is not a problem for Tbone. He has cash. | |

| Ok guys I called the state of NC today concerning this.
I contacted the Sales and Use Tax department of NCDOR. Their phone number is 919 814 1082.
Anyways. Here is what we are supposed to do if we buy out of state and of course register it with a NC address like I would be doing. We are supposed to not pay sales tax at whatever state we purchase the machine. After buying the machine we are supposed to go to DORNC.COM and fill out form E554 which is a Consumer Use Tax Return. It will have a chart on what to pay which for most here would be 6.75 percent or 7 percent depending on which county you live in. Mail it in with a check and keep it for records. As long as you pay it before the end of they year then you are good. If you bought now you would need to send them a check by the end of next month. If you bought in January then you have all year to get them that payment. I asked him how they catch people and he said that States audit these shops VERY Regularly. They share info and thats how you get caught. They especially look at the dealers on the borders of states.
He said if you do not do this process then of course you will get billed and will have a fine with it as well. It may take a couple of years to catch it but eventually he said they try to catch it all.
He was very nice and said to have at it on purchasing across the state line, just make sure you pay that tax instead of getting that bill and fine at a bad time not expecting it. Better to just be honest and pay it at a time that you can plan for.
Hope this helps out everyone and solves this question. Now I know what to do. |

oh I know! I think in some cases you could get away with it and some do. Its a crap shoot either way. I always do things legit so if I end up getting one out of state then I will fill out the form and send it in. |
