| Well...I went to visit my wifes grandfather today. While I was there making small talk with the 87 year old pearl harbor survivor I asked him if he knew where I could get a good deal on a trailer. He told me that he knew where I could get a 16' x 7' car / equipment hauler for nothing!!! I asked him to tell me more....he told me that it was his but his "friend" had it for the past several (7) years....his friend was climing ownership due to the length of time that he had "borrowed" it for. I made a trip to this gentlemans residence and told him I was there to pick up my wifes grandfathers trailer and this is what I got!!!! Not too bad for the price!!! Anyone know how to adjust the breaks on one of these? The brakes seem to lock up when the plug is plugged into the back of my truck. I may rewire it as well...its got a taillight out and it uses the older, small round plug rather than the new larger one. |

| If it is the older magnetic style breaks .... it may be as simple as taking emory cloth and scuffing up ..... well the magnetic parts. There is a name for them but I forget what they are called. I have a older equipment trailer that has them. When you take off the wheels you will see what I am talking about. | |

| OK...I looked under the trailer and there is no break box...the wires go straight from the plug to inside the drums.
(does that help any?) |

If it looks like this ... it is the oval disc at the bottom of the hub. | |

| Well they work off the tow vehicles power the more volts the harder the brakes apply. The new trucks like your H3 have a 12v positive pole with the trailer lite plug. The wire maybe crossed or in the wrong loction and your brake power wire on the trailer maybe were the 12v power comes from your H3 causing the trailer brakes to lock up when plugged in. If the brakes only lock when you plug it into the H3 I can assure you the brake wire is plugged into your 12v positive on your H3.(which is good news cause it means the brakes work on the trailer) The trailer plug on your H3 the cap of it tells you what each of the 7 poles do. Trace the wires on the trailer to make sure they are all in the right locations before you start replaceing lites because the wires may just be in the wrong places. Also if something is messed up it may blow some of your fuses under the hood for the trailer lites. GM has different fuses for the trailer lites then the rest of the truck so if something gos wrong on the trailer you don't lose all your lites. There are even different fuses for right and left turn/brake lite functions. I'll see if I can find a pic of how the trailer plug should be wired and post it on here in a bit. I'll check back if you have any other ?s. | |

| Your truck will have a 7 pole so only look at the 7 pole not the 6 pole diagram above it. Good luck!

| Did the guy that had your wife's granddad's trailer give you any lip when you came after it? Hope not. Stuff like that can make for a right uncomfortable deal sometimes. Do those brakes work like camper brakes? Do you need a brake controller on the tow vehicle? |

| No lip was given to me.....my wifes grandaddy spoke with him this morning . He still had his kabota at his house and grandaddy was asking him when he planned to return it. His response was ownership is 75% possession. I asked grandaddy if he wanted me to go and get the kabota but he said not yet.
He also wanted grandaddy to know that I picked up the trailer....grandaddy told him that I was told to do so. He was also told that IF he needed to borrow the trailer he needed to contact me...its a shame he dont know where I live or my phone number...LOL.
I did not go in uniform...no need for that!!!
As far as the truck goes I thought that it would have a brake controller installed from the factory seeing how it has the towing package....but..it does not and thats why the trailer brakes are not working. I did get elbo deep in the trailer and the brakes , parts and drums are all in working order so, when I do get the controller everything should be good to go.
I might start pricing tires here in a few days. |

He will not be taking advantage of him if I am around. I plan on picking up the kabota here in a couple weeks. |

| Hey Ski, let me pass along a little lesson I learned the hard way on trailer tires. DON'T BUY EM. Buy a good TRUCK tire instead. Reason is they don't make a trailer tire that has a speed rating over 65 MPH. If you go over the speed rating of the tire even when new and have a problem the warranty is shot down the drain. Put a good rated truck tire on it for load carrying ability and you won't have any problem. I learned all this at 80 MPH (WY speed limit) on an Interstate in WY at 114* heat. And when you're from out of town and they know it, yup, you're screwed! And the worst screwing of all is that those stinking Goodyear Marathons I had to buy were MADE IN CHINA! Perhaps you already knew all this? Are you still active duty Corps or LEO? I've yet to have the pleasure of meeting you. Only met a handful of guys from the board so far. Good luck. |

| Yeah they just started putting brake controllers in the HD trucks from the factory in the late 07 trucks. They should however put the brake controller wiring harness in the glove box the hooks up to you brake controller when you get one. In the HDs it plugs in down in the electrical box by your left foot. Not sure about the Hummers. | |
