Alexander Mendaloff, Jr.
Alexander Mendaloff, Jr. passed away peacefully on Friday July 3rd, 2009 after being in declining health for a number of years. He was 86 years old.
Born on January 24, 1923 in Foster, Pa. he was the son of the late Alexander Mendaloff, Sr. and Anna Pisarcik Mendaloff. Raised in Nowrytown, PA, he attended Elders Ridge High School. On November 4th, 1944 he married Edna Pauline Josey, who preceded him in death on August 20th, 1965.
In May of 1941 he joined the U.S. Army and served with Company F, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks near Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He was there during the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941. He fought in the following Pacific Theater Campaigns in the Solomon Islands: Guadalcanal, Bougainville, Vella La Vella and New Georgia. He earned a battlefield commission to 2nd Lieutenant during the battle for New Georgia. After being severely wounded on New Georgia he was sent back to the U.S. where he was hospitalized and after recovering, was assigned to Camp Shelby, Mississippi and served in the Military Police there and later in North Carolina guarding German POWs in Ahoskie and Hendersonville, NC. His military awards include the Bronze Star Medal with Valor Device, Purple Heart Medal w/oak leaf cluster, World War II Pacific Theater Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Combat Infantry Badge among many others. He was honorably discharged from the service in September 1945. He was a life-long member of the 25th Infantry Division Association, Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and The Loyal Order of Moose.
Settling in Statesville after the war, he worked in construction and then started his own business involving the sale and service of heavy equipment. He owned S&M Contractor’s Service and later Mendaloff Equipment Company. In 1968, he was granted a US Patent for his design of a cable laying device, which is still in use today. He was an active member of the Associated Independent Rebuilders and Parts Suppliers and served as their president and vice-president. In 1976 he was appointed by Gov. Jim Hunt to serve as the Director of the State’s Rural Electrification Authority. He also served 15 years as the Chairman of the Statesville ABC Board. He was a life-long Democrat and loved to talk politics.
He enjoyed the NC coast and traveling the world. He was especially fond of Alaska where he and Frances loved to visit and salmon fish. He was an active member of Providence United Methodist Church.
In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers Frank, Michael (Mitch) and Joseph Mendaloff; and, two sisters, Annie Mendaloff and Rose Mendaloff Betsa.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years Frances Cline Mendaloff of the home, his four children, Cynthia Mendaloff Benton of Statesville, Alexis Mendaloff Sensabaugh (Charles) of Vinton, VA, Alexander Mendaloff III (Martha) of Statesville, Bonnie Cline Ward of Statesville and a brother Nicholas Mendaloff (Althea) of Pennsylvania. Seven Grandchildren: Michael Benton Mendaloff, Elisha Navey Sherrill (Bradley), Heather Benton Przasnyski (Robert), Erin Mendaloff Green (Richard), Terry B. Benton (Cassey), Angie Navey Burgess (Brian), Kirsten Ward and twelve great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday July 7th at Providence United Methodist Church, 1273 Old Mocksville Road, Statesville, NC, with the Rev. Ron Karriker officiating. Internment, with military honors, will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville.
Visitation will be from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday July 6th at Nicholson Funeral Home. Pallbearers are: Michael Benton Mendaloff, Terry B. Benton, Bradley Sherrill, Brian Burgess, Robert Przasnyski and Ron N. Hillard. Honorary Pallbearers are: Veterans of the 25th Infantry Division (Wolfhounds).
