| I dunno Groundhog. Looks like it would weaken the ball joint.
By the way...."Save the Groundhogs!" |

| Many factory vehicle ball joints have grease fittings, they do the same thing, make them and then drill and tap them. It won't hurt there strength, I'm going to do it when I replace mine. | |

| I think I'll try it to, on a couple anyway. The ball joints stay wet and muddy all the time. The rubber boot dosn't protect anything. It just traps stuff inside there. Tbone. The groundhogs are getting a break. When the weather cools off they better head for cover.Heh Heh. | |

| ooooooh!! I see whats going on now. The cut away ball joint throws me off...... I think thats a good idea. I would def like to give it a try. Maybe greasing the ball joint every time would push the dirt and crud out keeping fresh grease in it. Groundhog....I just joined the group for groundhog rights. The group protects them from hunters. |

| OK.. The cutaway is a little misleading. Somebody was just checking the clearance for the grease fitting. That's an old ball joint.. | |

| I just learned a lesson on balljoints today. The 1st time I replaced mine, the bottom ones were junk, but the top ones were still good. Later on down the road, by bottom ones wore slam out, so I thought I would get a few more rides by putting my old top ones in there. Big mistake. I got 2 rides out of them. Anytime one is bad, I'm going to go ahead and replace all 4, and trash all the old ones. | |

| One thing I started doing is when I replace the ball joint...I take my needle grease gun and pack the rubber boot full of marine grease. It seems to keep some of the mud and water out. I fill the boots every time I grease my machine and it seems to help. | |

| My experience is similar to Hump's. Bottoms wear out quickly and used top joints don't last long on the bottom. My brand new, non-OEM, ball joints were loose after our Bergoo ride. Dirt and water contamination haven't been an issue for me. I can tear up anything. Getting ready to install a set of ASR offset A-arms with heim joints. | |

| Drew n I talked about this last year. I drilled a ball joint n put the shortest grease fitting they make. I had to use stainless steel ones to be strong enough to hold. Now what I found is that when I put grease fitting in the ball touched the grease fitting but the ball joint was not a new one. It was one that was (mine) used n I replace them periodically so as not have a broken one on the trail. I check mine if there is slop on it I replace. The pic at the beginning of this thread looks like they drilled off center. I tried that as well. Nothing but cast. I'll drill a new ball joint but I think it'll be a waste as well. | |

| Here's my current project. After bending A-arms, breaking tie-rods(and subsequently CV joints, hubs and bearings) decided to try ASR A-arms. What I had been bitching about as bad ball joints turned out to be bad bearing carrier mounts, hence the bushings. We'll see. | |
