| I just bought a Kenwood TK 840 radio off of Ebay. It does not have an antenna. Does anyone know what antenna to get for it.
Thanks | |

| I use a 1/4 short wave! Make sure it's UHF and will get the frequencies we use. 462-467 range I believe.
Here's one on the Ebay. |

| Make your own w/a piece of flat stock and a one inch hole. I drilled a one inch hole in my roof and mounted it there.. Surprisingly it has stayed up there for a couple years. | |

| I currently have a large EMP from bumper and I have placed it on there with the magnetic base. I am think of making a triangular peice out of flat stock (4" x 12" x 3/16") and bolt that to the hood in front of the passenger roll cage bar. By being triangular it will lean back at the same angle as the windshield and if it gets hit by a tree it will just bend back to the roof. It will only stick up above the roof by a couple of inches. I am also thinking of getting a peice of sheet metal and using a lock-n-ride clamp to mount it in rear box next to the rear window. I will experiment and see which I like best. | |

| I thought it had to be on a large flat surface above the roof? I bought a used radio off ebay but I know nothing about uhf antennas. | |

| I'm not sure what the ideal mounting is but I know that with 25 watts it's got to be a lot better than a 1 watt handheld with internal antenna. | |

| It should have a flat surface several inches around it. Works better. That's the reason I mounted mine on the roof. But most folks have them on some kind of bracket in the rear below the roof line. Seems to work ok. | |

| Mine is the little one that Ross posted. Very simple to mount and is short and unobtrusive. It's mounted on roof above radio. | |

| There are at least 2 different styles of antennas as far as mounting goes. Some just require a mounting point like the one I have and other require a large metallic surface around the antenna (like mounting it in the center of a car roof) that helps the antenna function. Then there are of course the longer antennas that can be cut and tuned and are great for long range, the smaller 1/4 wave antennas that are great for shorter distances and car to car stuff like what we do. |

| Are you looking for a simple small antenna that will work with the UHF radios on the trails? |

| This link I left for Bob T is still good! It will work with the UHF radio's that most are using. I have mine mounted just off the whip mount on my Arctic CAt. |

| Timmi, I got a Tram 1170. About $20 on ebay. The Kenwood Radio uses a PL-259 connector which this one comes with. | |

| There are several good videos on You Tube and at Rugged Radio on antenna tuning and overall installation. One of the bigs things to remember when running you antenna cable is not to coil the extra cable and tie it up. Either run the cable all over the car so you use it all up and don't have to coil it or cut in and attach the connector so you have just enough cable. Most antenna come with the end not attached. |
