Hope there is room.for an Ohio guy

Hello all, new to the forum, I live in lancaster ohio.

Ohio pretty well sucks for riding except for a few small private areas and a state forest so I venture put of state to ride alot.

I haven't had my sxs to wv yet but I've been riding jeeps over there for a good while, hoping to get the sxs over some.
I'm about an hr and a half from parkersburg. My sxs is a 15 wildcat sport limited. It's pretty much all stock but I beat the crap out of it taking it places maybe I shouldnt. I like to ride technical trails, and real rocky stuff. Not really into smooth groomed trails, but if I have to ride them I like to run hard and steady on themy and not just put around at 10mph. Not really into omg im gonna die hills though.

Seems everyone has sxs these days but finding folks that enjoy the same type.of riding as I do is tough to find, I've found most want to just run 10mph and stop every half mile to drink, or they want to use thier sxs as rock bouncers, so here I am hoping to find some more folks somewhere in the middle.

 Sounds like you ride about like most of the people on here.  No complete slow pokes here, they get weeded out quick.  I can't stand to ride in low range all day on easy trails and get 30 miles in.  Done it with people I really like to hang out with, but didn't care much for it.

Low range all day in stuff that requires use of the four wheel drive, and more importantly the front Locker is what I want the most, I enjoy a good challenge as said. If I am not using 4 wheel drive I had better be moving a little faster, and I hate stopping every 5 minutes.

When you are in tough stuff and have to stop to repair or winch is one thing but stopping just to stop is no fun. I "rode" 7 hours this weekend on trails put in by a dozer and put less than 30 miles on. It was under 15mph all day with alot of stopping for what I felt was no reason. Just not my style.

I don't mind driving to get to a ride but I hope to be riding more hours than I drive to get there. Anything over about 2 hours one way I'd prefer to make atleast 2 days out of

I'm not able to this weekend, but I'll definitely hook up with you guys for a ride in the very near future I came here to find people to ride with who are like-minded in the only way to find out if we ride the same as me to actually show up.

The only thing I can say is I'm kind of a pussy when it comes to hill climbing, not really sure why just always have been, other than that I should be right. Like I said I like to ride had a pretty hard pace

Don't worry about hill climbs. We have them, but no one climbs very often.

We do all those styles of riding - just depends on the day and mood.  Typically we get on it pretty hard most of the day, covering quite a bit of ground.  Then ease up in the evening to enjoy some beverages.  My favorite riding is heading out after it gets dark.  There's something special about being in the middle of nowhere at night!

Well it sounds as though I may have finally found a decent group. I'll try to get out with you guys as soon as I can

I made a skid plate for it out of a sheet of steel, already, but I would like an aluminum skid but money is my issue

... what do you call "pretty hard" we normally hit 70+ miles on winter rides and many times over 100 on summer rides.... I track every ride, most rides that are over 70 miles, we "average" over 12 mph... that is moving along when you count in breaks, fixes and extractions..

I put 74 miles on Saturday in 6 hours at rush, but that's because they are not technical trails, it was all fair smooth, even the ones labeled hard.

It isn't about miles to me it's about difficulty. I'm happy going a mile if it is a damn rough mile.

I ran a poker run that was 100 miles in 5 hours in Sept, it only had a few technical sections and the rest of it was pretty wide-open through the woods.

I would assume that if you're putting a hundred miles on a day then you are not running in abundance of stuff that I considered to be hard, but it does mean that you're hauling some pretty good ass, which in most cases makes up for the lack of hard stuff.


But out of curiosity out of those hundred miles how many of them are road miles between trails?

I am trying to reschedule some stuff that I have going on Saturday so I can make it down and ride because that's about the only way the find out if I I'm going to enjoy riding with you guys and if I'm able to hang.
If I can't make this Saturday work I will definitely make sure I get down there in the very near future

I have riden quit a bit of the trails with jimbob ,finz,elmo. most trails are fairly easy but they run a good pace. lots of fun more laid back. lots of creek crossing..some hardtop roads ..nothing like Wellsville .I have yet to find another place like Wellsville.  I always heard rush was like Wellsville  but have yet to make it down there.

I went to rush Saturday and it is nothing like Wellsville.

It is 7000 Acres of trails that were put in by bulldozers with a few Hills. I expected a whole bunch of crazy hill climbs and there really wasn't much down there.

3 pool Hill looks to be the toughest that I found and it is about half the size of Scooby-Doo but it's steeper like killer.

And like you I haven't really found anything that compares to Wellsville.

I have not had my side-by-side long enough to get it out to a lot of different places and right yet but in the Jeep some of my favorite places are Slade Kentucky and Ivy branch.

I was riding Ivy Branch for about 10 years before Hatfield McCoy came in. I am told people are still in their writing but I haven't gone back yet although I plan to,
Trails don't have to be hard when you're riding at a good pace. Which it sounds like jimbob does.

I put in a lot of miles at rush and I never used the four-wheel drive unless I was on a hill, and I have already said I'm not really into the hill climbing stuff so it was I don't think I'll probably ever go back.

I don't know if you have ever been to Renegade Ridge but even though the trails they are pretty easy I enjoy going there, but the 20-some mile Loop they have just isn't enough to justify the two-and-a-half-hour drive more than once a year for me, since I can beat a Wellsville in another half an hr.


I grew up 10 miles from Perry State Forest that's where I have always ridden my four wheelers at, and I take the side by side there quite a bit because I'm still only 40 minutes from it now. I know it well enough now that I can write through it pretty quickly and I'm getting a little tired of riding it all of the time by myself

Jimbob is a great trail leader. Seventy or eighty mails a day and you will be in 4x4 many times.

wellsville is about 45minutes from me ..500 acres are for sale now {the free zone} cops are getting mad  people are getting crazier I try to stay away.been riding there since the late 70s to many drunks now..its still fun to watch the drunks tear there shit up .. I am getting to old for that stuff.. WV is the place to be..

No doubt wv is the place to ride, but I'll keep living here in ohIowa uboil we get vehicle inspection state wide, the fact I can get away with driving basically anything has kept me here.

I've never had any issues at Wellsville with anyone but myself , I don't drink, but the drunks don't bother me as we usually run trails most off the crowds don't. Rr tracks have always been an issue and I just stay away from them, and I very seldom ever see Freezone parking area. I saw Freezone on zillow a couple weeks back, I've been watching it. I have been going to Wellsville for around 15 years but I only go a couple of times a year.

Rush and Wellsville are about the same drive for me and after going to rush I would definitely choose Wellsville over it everyou time.

The next closest place to me that is a large area I can go ride without needing to know somebody or haven't got is going to be harfield and McCoys bear wallow.

It doesn't look like I'm going to be able to pull off going to Parkersburg and riding with Jim Bob this weekend unfortunately, and next weekend is when I'm going to go to Wellsville, so I'll try to hook up with you guys towards the end of this month if you will be riding.

Well I was able to make it down and ride with Jim Bob on Saturday. As you all said I had a really good time. He rides the way I like to ride when the trails are like the ones we were on and I will definitely be going down and following him around some more.

AS ALL THE WORLD SHOULD KNOW BY NOW, OLE, JIMBOB IS STILL THE BEST DAMN GUIDE IN WV. IF ANY DOUBT JUST BRING YOUR ASS ON DOWN HERE RIDE.  

If you don't believe he is the best trail leader in WV. Just ask him.
