Maybe coming down

Thinking about planning a trip with the family the first week of August. We were looking at the Hatfield McCoy trails. Where is a good place to camp with tents and what trails do you recommend? Are there any free trails to ride also?

plenty of free trails....you can camp at Ashland atv resort and pinnacle creek atv campground....there are more around....someone will chime in soon....hope to see you on the trails...

Maybe you can stop by for a sheave install by then too lol. You could do a day ride on our local trails here (free) then head on down to H & M trails, they also have outlaw trails called the Wagon Wheel (also free) in that same area. Prolly be a few members in the area to show you around, just post & let folk know for sure when you'll be there.

There are more free trails in the area than H/M trails just so you know but you got to know where to go or just start exploring

Yea, try Ashland Resort. You can connect to 3 Hatfield trails there & plenty of free trails

Depends on if you have the testing done on them.

Made reservations at Ashland ATv for the first week of August. Should I buy permits for everyone or is there enough free trails around the area to keep us busy during the week? We probably won't ride everyday.

There are more free trails than you can ride.I have been there over 200 times and still have not rode them all but it depends on how far from camp you want to go.

Well since I've never been there before and I will have my family I don't want to get to far from civilization in case we break down.

the passes expire at the end of the year....if your not gonna make it back by then,,,,,you might not get your money's worth....

This will be the only time, this year, we will be down. I think I have asked this question before, has anyone ever been harassed for having an extened roll cage on their machines with seats and harnesses mounted in the bed? They make reference to this in the rules for sxs's, (since they're not manufacturer installed).

It's rare that you even see a ranger ... but if you do it's hit or miss as to what they will look the other way on from what I hear.

Maybe I will just stay off the Hatfield McCoy trails. Does anyone have any gps maps they taken for the free trails?

Just post the dates you will be there in a new thread under Wagon Wheel and I'm sure someone from here will be there and won't mind showing you around but if not read this thread for GPS tracks for the free trails

I seen the way points but I thought they were for specific points along the trails. Iwas hoping some one had actually done some track logs.

there's a bunch of info under gps and gadgets heading..

Are they still having a lot of trouble with machines being stolen there?

Not that I have heard ... they installed a camera & beefed up security a little I think. Just be smart about where you park at night, always take your key out & maybe get a lock or something.

I had not carried insurance before but I purchased it yesterday just in case. What kind of lock do you recommend? Do you mean chaining them together and locking them?

Yea ... insurance is a must. Just some sort of rope lock & yes chain them together.

I think the thefts have stopped as I have not heard of any more but with insurace who cares is what I say.I will take a 2012 model if they get mine
