PostSubject: Best option for trailer floor?   Best option for trailer floor? Icon_minitimeMarch 1st 2012, 12:34 pm

Hopefully picking up the new trailer later today, and it is good to go with everything (vinyl walls, etc), except the floor is plywood. I have heard that some folks have used that garage floor paint/sealant, but wanted to get input from someone that has actually done it before. Any thoughts/tips on how this worked out for you (I am assuming that that type paint adheres to plywood floors).
I had also heard of folks using the roll on Rhino liner. While durable, seems to me it might not be so easy to sweep off when dirty.
Thanks for all the help!

If you two r talking about open trailers this is what I've done, really inexpensive. I purchased a broom (cheap, think my wife got it from dollar store years ago), my trailer is 6 1/2 feet by 16 feet. Then go to advance, etc get a gallon of the cheapest motor oil they have. Pour 1/2 to 1 inch wide stripes of oil on each piece of wood n brush in with broom. It takes 20 to 30 minutes depending on how dry the wood is. Don't pour to much at one time or it will drip. I coat my floor about every third year. The wood does not bow. Looks new always. When u apply keep doing it until it has a slight glaze. It takes about a week to completely soak in. It is slippery until then but after it's great.

I put a piece of linoleum over the carpet in my toy hauler. To keep water and mud off it. Just mop it up.

we use thompsons water seal on our wood deck trailors.

took a pressure washer and cleaned it really good. let it dry fo a day then brushed it on thick.

the oil works good too, but damn its messy as hell and slick for a week or two.

for a enclosed i think id use some cheap vinyl flooring or something like it.

Steve, I think I used the outdoor porch paint as well with the grip agent they sell at the paint store. I think it blends better and doesn't sink like sand does (before you get a chance to paint it). You'll want something with a little bit of grip, at least for the ramp and the next 6 or 8 feet I'd think.

The U-Coat-It type stuff is expensive, but certainly looks nice on a concrete garage floor. I'm not sure if it would adhere to wood or not. I think you have to be really careful with your prep as well. I'd go to a good paint store and get their recommendation.

SuperDave.....hadn't thought about treating my trailer wood....that sounds like a great idea and cheap and would make the wood last longer....but does it get slick again when it's raining and wet? (All I need is to fall and make a scene at HT! NOT)

I did mine after seeing Daves over the years , I will say it looks terrible till it soaks in ( I suggest a nice warm day ) , it also made some of the wood that was trying to turn up lay down ... It is slick till after a few rainy days but its not bad at all after that ...

Thanks for the advice all. After doing a little bit of research I went with the Rustoleum Epoxyshield garage floor paint. I also put in the non-skid additive, based on tips I saw online and here (thanks Matt). Time will tell how well it holds up, but it has to be better protected than bare plywood (and looks a lot better too). Here's the before and after:

Now all you need to do is go to Walmart and get a bunch of coat hooks to hang all your gear down the wall of the trailer. You can't have too many of those!

For a open trailer, I have always used my old oil that I drain out of my cumins pick up> Pick a hot, sunny day, park the tralier in a open spot, and get to work. I pour the used oil into a coffee can and slpo it on with a paint brush. Put it on there thick! I have done this for years and it has worked better than Tompansons Water Seal, as that stuff just won't last very long. The used oil will soak into the wood in just a few days, but it will depend on how old the wood is. The older it is, the more oil in will soak up. I used to hot-shot and I oiled up the floor on that 40 footer every summer, and it was great. Would not get slick when when it was raining. I would also take the rubber mats out of the horse trailer every winter and soak those board with oil. Could go over twenty years without changeing out the boards in a horse or cow trailer. Maybe new boards get slick when wet, but boards that have dried out in the sun for a couple of years sure don't.

That enclosed floor looks great! The entire inside looks good.

Thanks Punder and 3012Red for the input on the oil. I was just wondering about using some used motor oil. Gonna work on it the first dry day we have.

I was thinking of doing the same thing. We are getting our new trailer this weekend and I was looking at flooring options. I was wondering how the concrete epoxy was holding up on your wooden floor.

Looks good, I like the look of it.
