If you can afford the 4 seater and the 4X4 can't you afford a 12 foot trailer. OMG disaster waiting to happen.

The ones that just have them sticking out over the tailgate is probably not the best setup but the ones that have a frame that takes them up over the cab is not at all a new idea.  Out west it is not that uncommon to carry rail buggies like that.  As far as height they are under 13' 6" that is the highway max and come in shorter than most 5th wheel mega toy haulers.

In a few years I will probably be hauling a 4 seater the same way.  There is no toyhauler rv that can carry a 4 seater sxs and 2 atvs so 2 atvs in a bumper pull toy hauler and a 4 seater on what is called a "buggy rack".

The other reason for the popularity of not trailering in california is the speed limit for combinations is 55 otherwise it is 70.

As long as you're not doing like the first idiot, and not over weight, have at it. That beats having to mess with getting a trailer in and out of places, and allows you to pull a pop-up camper, boat, or whatever else. I'd definitely recommend better straps than it appears most of them are using.
