| Hey I don't mind paying $50 a year to ride. Come to Va and you'll see what I'm talking about. Polaris RZR =$11,000 plus $2k to $3k for accessories Truck to tow your RZR= $20K to $60k Gas or diesel = $80 to $200 a trip Lodging= $80 to $150 a weekend Trail permit for one whole year=$50 or $25 for instate I'd say the trail permit is a pretty good deal if you ask me, even if you only went once a year.....get what I'm saying | |

| It's well worth the money for a permit. I think Jbeane is saying the other trails around wv are more challenging and more fun depending on what you like. Sometimes I like the groomed trails for going fast. H&M needs to let side by sides on all of their trails, not just the easier ones. Most of their trails that they don't allow a sxs on have some good climbs, but anything rough, and they bring in the dozer. Sometimes they do to much work, when they should have just posted the trail markers and called it done. I'm not in to doing something that will destroy my machine, but I do get a little upset if I ride all day and don't need 4 wheel drive. | |

everyone keeps telling me how awesome it is, but the more videos i see it looks like a golf cart could ride them. I dont have a car but I do take a one ton silverado on some of the H&M trails to repair gas meters or do maintenance on them but not all the trails are like that. It is worth it to me to pay the trail permit fee for me to have the option to ride on them. I ride outlaw and H&M about equal amount of time. Depending on who I have with me will determine outlaws or H&M for me. I like the H&M for the security factor. I also think that if it wasnt for the H&M system atv'n would be as big in wv as it is. People come in to ride the H&M system and then find out about how many outlaw trails there are and come back to ride those. As long as they keep the trail permit fee below 75 a year I will continue to buy mine every year.

| When you don't have anywhere to ride like I do here in central VA, trust me you don't mind paying $50. I don't even ride the HMT trails that much, but I do cross them a lot to get from one Outlaw trail to another. I ride about every 3 to 4 weeks up there. I don't mean to sound like a real ass or anything, but it kills me to hear people who go up there all of the time and don't want to spend $50 for a permit or they sit there and call the HMT folks a bunch of communist who are out to get your money. Hey if its bringing money into WVa's economy, then I'm all for it. I have seen people up there that are so freakin cheap that they don't want to ride with their buddy's who are riding the HMTs because they just don't want to get a permit. But yet they riding a fully decked out RZR with endless accessories and $80 to $150 worth of beer and liquor strapped to the back rack. Oh and to top it off, they pull into camp with a brand new $50k diesel truck. Not trying to tick anybody off or make enemies...just telling it the way I see it. Cause I hear this crap all of the time when I ride up there. If it were not for them trails up there in WV, I wouldn't be in this great hobby. You can't even take your wife or girlfriend out to eat at a good restaurant for $50 now a days....get what i'm Saying. | |

| Well lets be honest here and cut him some slack. He may like beer and beer aint allowed on the H/M trail. There are people that do not buy passes because of that. I dont drink and dont come to drink personally. If I wanted to drink I can stay home and drink. Save a ton of money......
Either way I always buy my pass at the beginning of each year. I like riding H/M and always pick one up in January at Ashland. |

| I hear you all on the comments and agree with them all.
Ohio basically chases trail riders out of the state unless you want to go to the 2 SMALL trail systems (Wellsville & Wayne). The trail pass for Wayne is similar price wise to H&M but the length of the trails is nowhere near that of H&M! So the $100 H&M trail fee ($50 x 2 riders) is a small price to pay for me too. Especially if it keeps trails open to ride on for the future. I drive 8 hours one way to ride at Ashland. A trip there for me is like $600 for 3 nights.
Yes, I have a pass but back to what jbeane was saying about the sxs being limited to the less difficult trails, it does irritate me too! I feel that if I am buying the pass then don't limit my riding style. If I want to ride the hard stuff then it should be my choice. There are too many bypasses around the difficult sections that one is not forced to ride out of their comfort zone to ride!
As far as the drinking goes, I am a firm believer in that should be saved for the campgrounds and not the trail though. Don't get me wrong, Geterdun has hooked me on that there apple pie!

| im not against the H&M. i dont have to drink, but chose to do so.
what im getting at is theres thousands of miles of trails here in wv that are free to ride on.
we ride about every week end and usally get 50-80 miles. most of the time its with in a 20-40 min drive from home. ( i live just below charleston)
theres plenty of easy stuff thats not ''groomed'' that novice riders can enjoy and not be afraid of. plus theres PLENTY of serious mud, climbs, etc for the top riders.
i just cant find or understand the intrest in the H&M trails. the $25 dollar permits isnt the issue either. i bought a couple helmets at the beginning of this year but i havent seen any pics or videos of anything i want to ride out there.

| All are great post to an important fact in riding in WV. I have been buying HM passes for the last 3 years and only sparingly ride them till this year due to friends and location etc. The main reason I've supported them is due to trying to support a areas of interest to be able to keep riding as the Outlaw trails keep shrinking. Now don't get me wrong as long as they keep logging and installing gas lines on private property up there there'll alway be Outlaw trails. But as time goes on Hatfield will keep gobbling up more of those trails making new systems such as Pocohontas and the next Motoka. Due to this we are getting cut off from some favorite old riding areas due to the mining companies also but H/M is gaining some of these areas back so it's a double edge sword that we will alway learn to live with if we want to ride. Also as mentioned I like to have a cool beverage every once in a while while riding and have found that I too can wait till I get back to the campfire and still have a blast riding that day. It always my decision to ride where I want to due to who is riding with me and if they also have passes or cant afford them then it's OUTLAW all the way. | |

I've been riding up there for 15 years. We don't have your luxury. I know more outlaw trails then most locals do up there but anyone that comes in from out of state doesn't know the outlaw trails. So a marked trail system is the deal for these folks!

| I will not ride H/M trails for at least 3 years, unless It would happen to be at a spring/fall ride. I only have two problems with the H/M rules. One is restricting SXS to certain trails. This is more of just a pet peev. However the main reason I won't ride is because of the rule that kids have to meet the age requirments of the manufacturers recommendations. My son will soon be 13 however he rides a Honda 250 EX, which Honda recommends a person be 16 before riding that quad. Could you imagine being 15 and still stuck on a 90cc quad, when you can drive a car with a permit?I don't wanna go on a trip that far and leave my family behind, unless the wife and I are just trying to get away from everything. I understand they are trying to keep accidents to a minimal. I actually think the fees are very resonable. I'm sure we will ride there in the future. | |

| All good posts from different points of view. Here's the #1 reason H&M is a good thing no matter what anyone says. Those trails are going to be there for us to ride when all others are gone, posted, leased, mined, etc. I believe even the EPA and all the tree huggers may leave it alone because it brings in money that wv needs.
Bergoo is all we have here locally right now. One very nice riding area was leased by a hunting site that wants $300/yr for membership to access, and that's after they have a meeting and aprove you. The other was strip mined, but that was good jobs for my friends and family. Meanwhile back at the ranch, H&M was growing.
I used to load up, and stand around for 30 minutes trying to decide on the 3 riding places within 30 minutes of my house. Didn't know how great it was then, but I know now.

| I gotta say...this past ride that Carolinarhino and I did, we hit a lot of the H/M trails. I enjoyed them as much as the outlaw trails. Sometimes ya just wanna stroll along and enjoy the scenery.
As far as drinking when riding....I don't see a thing wrong with it as long as you keep it in check. We drink a few while riding and yes even on the H/M trails (we have a hiden cooler). We don't drink a lot on the trails and we do it when we stop for a break and keep it kinda out of sight.
The H/M system is a great system and I hope it grows even bigger...the only thing that they need to change is to let the sxs's on more trails and I also would like to see them make more difficult trails and just mark them as such.

| Oh I forgot to add this.....
Also another good perk to HM is that they have maps and signs. That's great for idiots like me that get lost on outlaw trails. I'm still learning outlaw so if I don't want to get lost then I go to the HM trails so I know where I am at. That's the only big trail system where you don't have to know the trails and they give you a map. |

| I ride because i enjoy it , I drink because i enjoy it , and the two go together in my eyes, i have ridden the H/M trails a few times and took a cooler and was lucky not to get caught. I will always drink as will my wife when ever we ride , thats me and if i get out of hand then i exspect someone to let me know .To be honest thats the reason we never did the last sophia ride , in the original post we all were asked not to drink on the trail and thats cool , would rather have you tell me up front so i dont spend money getting there and then find out that i couldn't take a cooler. Thats my two cents, i know i dont spend alot of time on here and you all are saying who's that guy he never comes around who cares about his opinion,,,,,,,,,see your asses on the fall ride i will be the one with the red RZR and the cooler full of beer straped on the back | |
