| I decided to chop 4 inches out of my cage. I did a lot of research and decided that I didn't like the way most of them were done. I had several characteristics that I wanted or did not want in my cage chop.
- I did not want my windshield hoop to be raked back, I wanted to keep the factory rake angle.
- I did not want to have to modify my roof or re-drill the holes in it.
- I wanted the welded joint to be as straight as possible without a crooked or bent look.
I cut 4 inches out of the cage, with my cuts above and below the lower cross bar, which had to come out anyway. Next, I cut the welds where the tubes and gussets attach at the top of the windshield hoop, which allowed me to keep the factory windshield rake angle. I rotated the tubes/gussets to the proper angle and re-welded them in their new position. I had to bend the two lower tubes at the cage mounts behind the seats, this was easy after I cut the weld on the inner cage mount gusset. I used 1.5 inch tubes for my sleeves, everything lined up nearly perfect with no funky misalignment. I re-used the lower cross bar and put it back at the same height so that my harness height would be the same. I cut/ground off all the factory tabs and brackets (not shown in the pics). I welded everything up, sanded, primed and painted it and it came out great. The location of my cuts was based on a CAD drawing that I did prior to starting. It showed me the exact locations to make my cuts. | |
