Has anyone just went ahead and cut off excess cable not needed instead of coiling up excess cable and having it hanging in the roof area? I think it would look so much neater if i could just cut off excess but i want to make sure it's not causeing performance issues if i do this!

Keith, from what little I know it really cuts out on your range and severely decreases the performance of it. It seems like the antennas are tuned to predefined cable lengths.

Thanks Daryl thats what i wanted to know before i wasted the antenna and need to get another one. Where did yall find the nmo mounting bracket at, does radio shack carry them?

I got mine online, radio shack might have them if not I heard you can get them from places that sell ham radio equipment and i was told somewhere here in Winston Salem does but I don't know who.

Yes, the coaxial cable can be cut but it does have to be a certain length but I do not know what that length is for these radios. With CBs it's in 3' sections if I remember correctly. The length of the coaxial cable and the length of the antenna are "tuned" to bring the standing wave to zero. You have to use a meter to tune them.

A lot depends of how much you want to spend. You can get a very usable UHF radio on Ebay for less then $100 or you can go to rugged radio.com and put in a radio and intercom system and spend much more.

I first bought one like I linked in the post above but then went and got a rugged radio to match my intercom. I just finished hooking it all up in mine and am very happy with it.  The wife likes to be able to talk and not yell. She also likes to wear a helmet. Our helmets have speakers and mics in them.  I also bought the headsets with mics in case I dont feel like wearing a helmet. There is a 3.5 plug for an mp3 player to pipe music into the headphones/helmets. When you talk using the intercom, the music automatically turns itself down. I have an external speaker for the UHF radio if I don't want to wear a helmet or the headsets. My radio came pre-programmed with the 75 most used off road frequencies.

Sounds like you got a good set up.....I'm so glad my wife likes to yell....it saved me a bunch of dollars..

One thing I learned about rugged radio is wait until whatever you want is on sale. I am guessing I have about $1000 in my radio and intercom. The radio was regular 359.00 but I got it on sale for $200. The intercom system was almost $550 that came with the helmet kits. Also got the 2 headsets for $100 ea. The rest is assorted cables, mounting bracket, PTT button, external speaker.

Local radio guy has eight motorola cdm750 radios programed with mic,antenna and wiring harness.$175.00 plus shipping let me know if interested.[pm not working post up here]

hey man , I just got one from kymedic on the hotrodrhino.com forum kenwood 16 channel preprogramed with everything, 150.00 shipped works great

Ebay is a great place to pick up used preprogrammed radios for a pretty fair price. I have one in my workshop now that I got for $100 that I am keeping until a buddy of mine get his radio situation figured out.
